Lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid which causes swelling, most often affecting the arms or legs.

Lymphedema develops when lymphatic vessels are damaged, lymph nodes are surgically removed (often due to cancer treatment) or lymphatic vessels are impaired or missing.

Although there is no cure for lymphedema, physical therapy can dramatically decrease its symptoms so you can resume your everyday activities.

Therapeutic Modalities

Re+Active Rehab has specialized therapeutic equipment and professional training to pair with your treatment and assist with all injuries.

Ultrasound Therapy: Therapeutic ultrasound is used to decrease the inflammatory response, reducing tissue swelling and decreasing pain.

Electrical Stimulation: Electrical stimulation is used for pain management and is referred to as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy. Electrical nerve stimulation and electrothermal therapy are used to relieve neurological pain associated with various conditions.

Fluidotherapy: A modality of dry heat that uses a suspended air stream with the properties of a liquid. It simultaneously performs the functions of applied heat, massage, sensory stimulation, levitation and pressure oscillations. Dry Heat Therapy relieves localized pain, increases localized blood circulation, increases range of motion and relieves minor pain and stiffness associated with nonrheumatoid arthritis.

Paraffin: Paraffin wax can be used to help relieve pain that people have in their hands.  Hand issues such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can be relieved with this therapy. Paraffin wax acts as a form of heat therapy and can help increase blood flow, relax muscles, and decrease joint stiffness. Muscles spasms and inflammation can also be reduced with the use of paraffin wax.

Heat Therapy:  Heat increases blood flow by opening up blood vessels which in return supplies oxygen and nutrients to reduce pain and soothe sore muscles, ligaments, and tendons. The heat also reduces muscle spasms and can increase range of motion.

Cold Therapy: Cold therapy restricts blood flow and reduces inflammation and swelling. Cold therapy is a vasoconstrictor and is used right after an injury occurs and can be used in a number of conditions to assist with healing.
